Porter, Dr Louise, 2001. Children are People Too. Small Poppies, South Australia $25-00
The author of this book discusses a guidance approach to teaching children to behave considerately in contrast to the controlling approach that is often adopted. She sets out to guide children to manage their own feelings and behaviour. Porter argues that, with this approach, children can be taught to make wise decisions about their behaviour, to feel satisfied with their achievements, and to cooperate with those around them.
Porter Dr Louise, 2000. Student Behaviour. Alolen and Unwin, Sydney, NSW. $50-00
This book is written for teachers. Teachers are usually impatient with theory and would rather read a book of practical strategies. Porter argues that this approach fails as it is human nature to accept strategies that fit our pre-conceived theories. The problem with preconceived theories is that they have not been subjected to critical scrutiny. Rather they have been accepted on faith. She begins the book by examining some of the major theories of behaviour management and highlighting the weaknesses she sees in them. Having done this, she proceeds to examine a variety of behaviour management strategies which promote cooperation from the child rather than a reliance on control by the teacher (or parent). This is an excellent book which should be in every teacher's reference library.
Porter, Dr Louise, 2003. Young Children's Behaviour (2nd Ed). McLennan and Petty, Sydney, Australia. $48-00
The author's message is that "A caring relationship is the most powerful tool for guiding young children's behaviour." In taking a "guidance approach" to the management of children's behaviour, Porter examines the foundations for guiding children. She examines children's emotional and social needs since it is their attempts at satisfying those needs that drives much of children's behaviour. She describes strategies for dealing with inconsiderate behaviour in ways which aim to foster cooperation. This is an excellent book for parents who are concerned that their existing behavioural strategies are not as effective as they would wish.
